“Rue des Jardiniers. It’s a name that whispers of gardens past” a woman mused aloud as she consulted her map. The Rue des Jardiniers in the 12th arrondissement of Paris is not just any street. It is a testament to the city’s evolving story. Let’s step back to a time when this area was the old commune of Bercy.

Once, Rue des Jardiniers was known as Chemin des Sureaux. This was captured on Roussel’s 1730 plan. Imagine a simple country lane. It was far from the bustling street it is today.

The name Rue des Jardiniers wasn’t official until 1876. The street earned its name from the market gardens. Many such cultivations thrived here in the late 19th century. This area fed Paris.

Today, Rue des Jardiniers stretches about 160 meters. It is a modest 12 meters wide. The street begins at 313 Rue de Charenton. It ends at 29 bis-29 ter Rue des Meuniers.

Getting here is easy. You can take Metro line 8. Get off at Porte de Charenton station. You will then be a short walk away.

In 2024, the street underwent a transformation. It is now a “rue aux enfants” or a street for children. This reflects a modern focus on community. The project included expanding the sidewalk. Twelve new trees were planted. About 190 square meters of planting beds replaced parking spaces. This brings more green space to the area.

A new pedestrian crossing improves safety. Spaces for disabled parking have been relocated. Delivery zones were also moved. Twelve bicycle parking spots were relocated. Eight new ones were created.

Imagine children playing safely. The street has transformed into a greener space. It enhances community life on Rue des Jardiniers.

Rue des Jardiniers is more than just a street. It’s a story of Paris. It began as a country path. It evolved into a garden-lined road. Now, it is a community-focused space. It connects the past with the present. It showcases the ever-changing face of Paris.
