Is it merely a house, or could it be a time capsule? Casa Cravotto stands before us. It is a monument to Uruguayan architecture. Casa Cravotto is more than bricks and mortar. It is a testament to the Cravotto family’s architectural legacy.

This house-studio, called Kalinen, witnessed the lives and works of Mauricio and Antonio Cravotto. They were two generations of significant architects. They influenced Uruguay’s intellectual and professional architectural culture.

Mauricio Cravotto built Casa Cravotto between 1931 and 1932. Today, it is a National Historical Monument. Mauricio designed its furnishings between 1936 and 1946. The Universidad de la República bought Casa Cravotto. The Faculty of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism represented the university.

Inside Casa Cravotto, the Cravotto Foundation safeguards a treasure. Here are boxes and folders filled with photographs. There are reports and documents too. Correspondence, drawings, and plans fill the space. Materials used in exhibitions are also stored here. Among these items are over 1200 photos. These photos document the construction of the Palacio Municipal.

The Casa Cravotto also holds a library. It boasts about 2200 books. These books relate to architecture, urban planning, and geography. The library reflects the architects’ professional and academic pursuits. You can find first editions by Frank Lloyd Wright here. Works by Le Corbusier and Tony Garnier are present. Books by Erich Mendelsohn and others are also available.

Casa Cravotto also has a collection of magazines. This hemeroteca includes architecture and urbanism journals. These journals come from Italy, France, and Germany. They span from the 1920s to the 1980s.

Mauricio Cravotto was renowned nationally and internationally. His notable works include the Uruguayan Pavilion for the Seville International Exposition of 1929. He also designed the Montevideo Rowing Club in 1923. The Edificio Frugoni of 1927 and the Rambla Hotel of 1931 also bear his signature. He oversaw the construction of Montevideo’s Palacio Municipal.

Antonio Cravotto followed in his father’s footsteps. He earned his architecture degree at 24. He gained recognition in Uruguay and abroad. He served as a consultant for UNESCO. He was also president of the National Academy of Letters.

Delma Isabel Menéndez Rigoli donated the materials. She was Antonio Cravotto’s wife. Her donation ensures the preservation of their legacy. The Casa Cravotto stands as a modern manifesto. It is a cultural and architectural heritage site. The ground floor hosts the Cravotto Foundation headquarters. The first level showcases a museum space. The upper levels accommodate travel offices.

Casa Cravotto embodies Mauricio Cravotto’s urban planning vision. He championed a romantic view. This view prioritized people within their environment. He integrated French and American urbanism concepts. He applied them locally, such as in the 1930 Regulatory Plan.

Casa Cravotto is more than a historical monument. It’s a living testament to architectural vision. It shows dedication to urban and human-centered design. It’s a place where the past informs the future of architecture.
