Hidden within the verdant embrace of Val-de-Marne lies Marolles-en-Brie. A charming commune nestled twenty kilometers southeast of Paris. This is a place where history whispers through the trees and the past echoes in the stones.

Marolles-en-Brie boasts a rich heritage. Its origins trace back to at least 1088. Then the land belonged to Dreux III de Mellot. He was the archdeacon of the Parisian church. In 1097 he gifted it to nuns. He built a priory for them. It survived until the French Revolution.

Imagine strolling through Marolles-en-Brie. You’ll discover the remarkable Saint-Julien-de-Brioude church. This ancient edifice stands as a testament to time. Its Romanesque architecture blends beautifully with Gothic additions. It was classified as a historical monument in 1909. This church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living link to the spiritual life of the community for centuries.

Near the church stands the presbytery. It dates back to 1771. During the Revolution it became national property. It later housed the schoolmaster and eventually the town hall in 1844. A nearby Benedictine priory also stands as a witness of the past. Founded in the late 11th or early 12th century it was sold as national property during the Revolution. It was later transformed into a chateau with additions and a canal.

Explore the vestiges of the Chateau du Buisson. Its honor gate remains. It’s from the late 17th and 18th centuries. The chateau itself is gone. Only two pavilions survive. Nearby are the farms of Combault and Veaurichard. They once belonged to the Saint-Julien de Brioude priory. The Combault farm features an early 18th-century staircase. Veaurichard has been repurposed. Part of it is now a school.

Marvel at the Belle Image. This 17th and 18th-century residence was acquired by Berthier de Wagram in 1813. It is part of the Grosbois estate. Its name stems from a Virgin Mary chapel. This stood at its entrance.

Finally pay your respects at the war memorial. Erected in 1922 it honors the fallen from both World Wars. This is a quiet reminder of sacrifice.
