The Galerie de la Madeleine graces the 8th arrondissement. It elegantly stretches between Place de la Madeleine and Rue Boissy-d’Anglas. Inaugurated in 1846, the Galerie de la Madeleine owes its name to the nearby Madeleine Church. Its story began with the enlargement of Place de la Madeleine.

The Galerie de la Madeleine construction started in 1840. It finished in 1845. The Passage Jouffroy Company acquired the land at the corner of Rue Boissy-d’Anglas. They were renowned for developing other passages.

Architect Théodore Charpentier designed the Galerie de la Madeleine. His monumental design distinguished it from earlier examples. The glass roof is divided into panels. Elegant buttresses support it.

The Galerie de la Madeleine has two distinct facades. The Madeleine facade features caryatids. Jean-Baptiste Klagmann sculpted them. They frame the entrance from Place de la Madeleine. The Rue Boissy-d’Anglas side incorporates a 1700s building. Its rounded porch blends into the carved wood facade. This facade dates back to the gallery’s origin.

Once home to small shops and artisans, the Galerie de la Madeleine now hosts luxury boutiques. These shops offer fashion and accessories. The Galerie de la Madeleine exudes a classy ambiance.

The Restaurant Lucas-Carton was a famous establishment here. It boasted an Art Nouveau decor. Louis Majorelle designed it. Etienne de Gournevitch designed parts of it in 1904-1905. The restaurant has an entrance on Place de la Madeleine. Le Petit Lucas is a restaurant subsidiary inside the Galerie de la Madeleine.

Jean Cocteau once lived in the building at 9 Place de la Madeleine. He lived there with Jean Marais in the spring of 1938.

The Galerie de la Madeleine is 53 meters long and 4 meters wide. The arcade offers free access from Monday to Saturday. It is open from 8 am to 11 pm. The Galerie de la Madeleine is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
