Did you know Carlson Oxbow Park was once planned for flood control? This 89-acre haven in Hammond Indiana wasn’t always a nature reserve. It started its life in 1964 a project aiming to manage the Little Calumet River’s overflow. The river however had other plans.

Carlson Oxbow Park’s unique shape is a testament to a significant alteration of the landscape. In 1975 the Little Calumet River was straightened. This left behind a sharp bend a beautiful oxbow lake that gives the park its name. Imagine the surprise of the engineers that day the unexpected result of their work.

This wasn’t the end of the story though. The land sat undeveloped for years. Then a remarkable man stepped in. George W Carlson a dedicated Hammond City Council member served for 32 years. He championed the park’s creation playing a key role in its development. His dedication is honored in the park’s name. On October 7 1998 Carlson Oxbow Park was finally dedicated a testament to his vision.

Today Carlson Oxbow Park bursts with life. Over 50 bird species call it home. You can spot cardinals house wrens even the majestic peregrine falcon soaring above. The wetland areas are home to red foxes raccoons woodchucks leopard frogs and Eastern cottontail rabbits. A rich biodiversity flourishes in this unexpected oasis.

More than just wildlife Carlson Oxbow Park offers a peaceful escape. Walk its trails explore its unique landscape. Remember its story of flood control river redirection and the dedication of one man. It’s a reminder that even human interventions can lead to unexpected natural beauty. Enjoy the tranquility of Carlson Oxbow Park a place transformed from a flood control project to a vibrant wildlife sanctuary.
