Different from most bridges, the AVA Building represents innovation in infrastructure. It is not a bridge but it is a building at University Way. We’re standing before a testament to modern engineering. Let’s uncover its story.

The AVA Building showcases forward-thinking design and construction. The AVA Consortium, a collaboration of experts, created the AVA Bridge & Lift system. Walker Construction played a key role. They brought extensive knowledge of the rail industry to the project. Their project management skills proved invaluable.

Expedition Engineering contributed award-winning bridge design expertise. They worked on various infrastructure projects like HS2. The Manufacturing Technology Centre MTC developed a Knowledge Based Engineering model. This allowed for rapidly configurable designs with high quality.

Network Rail owns and develops railway infrastructure. Outokumpu supplied Duplex stainless steel for the AVA Building project. HawkinsBrown focused on architectural design. They prioritized passenger safety and accessibility. ARX reimagined the passenger lift system. They engineered a plug-and-play system for easy installation.

McNealy Brown helped develop the working model. They manufactured and fabricated bridge components. The AVA consortium includes Network Rail, Expedition Engineering and HawkinsBrown. McNealy Brown, ARX and Walker Construction also collaborated. Innovate UK and Network Rail co-funded the project as part of the TIES Living Lab program.

AVA moves toward Industry 4.0 principles. It revolutionizes the procurement, manufacture and installation of railway footbridges and lifts. AVA is faster to deliver. It’s simpler to install than standard industry practices. Only a single possession is required.

Stainless steel extends the footbridge design life to 120 years. This reduces early-stage degradation. It minimizes disruption to passengers. It lowers the whole-life carbon footprint. It cuts overall lifecycle costs.

The configurable nature of the AVA Building means it can fit any station. It can fit anywhere. Anthony Dewar of Network Rail believes the AVA system revolutionizes footbridge and lift design.

The AVA Building shows a carbon-friendly cost-effective design. It provides significant reductions in material and build time. It uses offsite manufacture and minimum impact onsite assembly. The AVA building stands as a symbol. It represents configurable design fitting any station. Its beautiful low maintenance structure uses lean Duplex Stainless Steel. The AVA Building represents collaboration. It signifies innovation in building and design.
