The Pays d’Yveline, a historic region nestled in the southwestern part of the Île-de-France, is a place where time seems to have stood still. Its rolling hills, dotted with ancient forests and charming villages, whisper tales of a bygone era. This is a land where you can almost feel the presence of the kings and queens who once hunted and roamed these very woods.

The Pays d’Yveline, also known as the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse, is a treasure trove of history and natural beauty. It’s a place where the past seamlessly blends with the present, where the echo of centuries past still lingers in the air. Its very name derives from the ancient forest of Yveline, which once stretched across a vast expanse. Today, a part of that forest survives in the famed Forêt de Rambouillet, one of France’s largest and best-preserved woodlands.

Imagine yourself walking along a winding path through the forest, the scent of pine and damp earth filling your senses. You hear the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the gentle murmur of a hidden stream. This is the Pays d’Yveline in all its natural glory.

But the Pays d’Yveline is much more than just a beautiful natural paradise. It’s a region steeped in history, a place where powerful kings and ambitious nobles once clashed and forged destinies. Its past is marked by centuries of intrigue, war, and the building of grand castles and abbeys.

One of the most prominent figures intertwined with the story of the Pays d’Yveline is Robert the Pious, the son of Hugh Capet, founder of the Capetian dynasty. In 997, he bestowed the right to collect wood from the Yveline forest upon Saint-Magloire Abbey in Paris. He also built a hunting lodge in Saint-Léger-en-Yvelines, as well as two fortresses – one in Montfort l’Amaury on the road to Paris, and another in Épernon on the road to Chartres.

Over time, the Pays d’Yveline became a patchwork of territories, with several powerful families vying for control. In 1224, the Montfort family, entrusted with safeguarding the Yveline forest, earned the right to establish the County of Yveline. This county, soon known as the County of Montfort, encompassed the regions of Montfort and Rambouillet, as well as major portions of Houdan and Dourdan. Its influence extended as far west as Maintenon, encompassing regions like the Eure and the Vieille-Cour in Auneau.

In 1292, the County of Montfort became a possession of the Duchy of Brittany through the marriage of Yolande de Montfort, heiress of the Counts of Montfort, to Arthur II, Duke of Brittany. It remained in Breton hands for two centuries, until Brittany was reunited with France in 1532.

Though the Pays d’Yveline has seen its share of upheaval and change, it has retained its rustic charm and natural beauty. Many abbeys and castles dot the landscape, standing as testaments to its rich history. And for those who seek a quiet getaway, the Pays d’Yveline offers a glimpse into a simpler, slower way of life, where nature reigns supreme.
