Did Sukarno ever imagine the grand ballroom of the Merdeka Palace transforming? It once echoed with the music of formal balls during the Dutch colonial era. Now, it serves as the Ruang Upacara, the Ceremonial Hall, where important state events unfold. The Istana Merdeka, or Freedom Palace, stands as a powerful symbol of Indonesia’s journey. This grand palace, located on the north side of Merdeka Square in Central Jakarta, has witnessed a fascinating evolution. It began its life as the Paleis te Koningsplein, the residence of the Dutch Governor-General. Its construction, starting in 1873, took six years and cost a hefty 360,000 Gulden. In 1879, Governor-General Johan Wilhelm van Lansberge became the first resident of this newly completed palace. Istana Merdeka remained the home of the Dutch Governor-General until the Japanese occupation during World War II. The palace then served as the residence of the Japanese army commander. A pivotal moment occurred in 1949. The Indonesian declaration of independence was announced from this very palace. The Dutch flag was replaced with the Indonesian flag, and the joyous cries of “Merdeka!” resonated through the square. From that moment on, the palace was known as Istana Merdeka, the Freedom Palace. President Sukarno, arriving from Yogyakarta, made Istana Merdeka his official residence. Today, the Istana Merdeka isn’t merely a historical landmark. It’s the heart of Indonesian executive authority, hosting state events, welcoming dignitaries, and serving as the president’s office. While the administrative functions have shifted to the State Palace and State Secretariat, Istana Merdeka remains a potent symbol of Indonesia’s hard-won independence. Even the changing of the guard ceremony, held on the last Sunday of each month, is a spectacle open to the public, a vibrant reminder of the palace’s living history.
