The Shanghai Jinhai Wetland Science Museum, nestled within Jinhai Wetland Park in Pudong, opened its doors on World Wetlands Day. This marks Shanghai’s first urban wetland science museum. The museum offers a unique blend of indoor and outdoor experiences. Inside, two main exhibits beckon. “City and Wetland” and “Exploring Jinhai Wetland” showcase the delicate balance between urban development and ecological preservation. The museum also houses visitor services, creative displays, research and conference facilities, a children’s wetland workshop, and temporary exhibition spaces. The exhibits are designed to be interactive and engaging. They feature rich scenes, artistic models, and lively scientific animations, all designed to make your visit to the Shanghai Jinhai Wetland Science Museum both fun and educational. Imagine shrinking down to the size of an ant and taking a flight through a vibrant wetland world. The museum uses Jinhai Wetland’s own little egret mascot, a pilot, to guide you through the exhibits. Stories connect the displays, enhancing the experience for all ages. Jinhai Wetland Park is a vital part of Shanghai’s outer greenbelt. It is Pudong’s only significant wildlife habitat. The Shanghai Jinhai Wetland Science Museum was developed in consultation with experts from the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology, the Biological Society, the Forestry Administration, and local universities. They aimed to create a place where the city and wetlands coexist. This multifunctional space combines wetland science education, nature experiences, family activities, and research training. Jinhai Wetland Park is situated along the East Asia-Australasian Flyway. This makes it an essential stopover point for migratory birds. The park’s healthy ecosystem plays a vital role in their journey. Birdwatchers can explore the grounds and observe a diverse range of species, from White-bellied Herons to Dusky Warblers and Greater White-fronted Geese. Twenty-five different bird species were recorded on opening day alone. This wetland science museum aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for wetlands. It offers a variety of nature education, observation, and science communication activities.
