Let’s step back in time. Picture P\u00e9cel in the 18th century. This wasn’t just any noble residence. It was R\u00e1day-kast\u00e9ly a hub of intellect and artistry.

The story of R\u00e1day-kast\u00e9ly begins with R\u00e1day P\u00e1l. He was a diplomat serving Ferenc R\u00e1k\u00f3czi II. R\u00e1day P\u00e1l acquired the P\u00e9cel estate through his marriage. He built a modest manor here. This manor formed the base of the current R\u00e1day-kast\u00e9ly.

His son R\u00e1day Gedeon transformed the estate. Between 1755 and 1774 he converted it into a beautiful baroque castle. R\u00e1day Gedeon hired Andr\u00e1s Mayerhoffer to oversee this ambitious project. Mayerhoffer was also the architect of the Grassalkovich Castle in G\u00f6d\u00f6ll\u0151. You might notice similar architectural elements.

But R\u00e1day Gedeon’s influence extended beyond architecture. He was a man of letters a writer a poet and a collector. R\u00e1day Gedeon turned R\u00e1day-kast\u00e9ly into a cultural center. His passion was collecting books. He amassed a vast library. It included classical works and contemporary Enlightenment literature. The library became a magnet for scholars and artists.

The walls of R\u00e1day-kast\u00e9ly echo with stories. The dining hall showcases R\u00e1day Gedeon’s unique taste. Black and white murals adorn the walls. These depict scenes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. R\u00e1day Gedeon added his own verses beneath each image.

The King’s Bedchamber once displayed portraits of Habsburg rulers. Joseph II even visited R\u00e1day here. The guest room known as Hercules Hall tells tales of the hero’s twelve labors. Kazinczy a prominent figure of the time often stayed here.

Tragedy struck in 1825. A fire engulfed R\u00e1day-kast\u00e9ly damaging the structure and destroying parts of the collection. The family faced financial difficulties. They auctioned off the castle in 1872.

The Kelecs\u00e9nyi family acquired R\u00e1day-kast\u00e9ly. But the castle fell into disrepair. Its treasures scattered. After World War II the building served as a hospital ward.

Today R\u00e1day-kast\u00e9ly is under restoration. It is owned by the Treasury. The historic gardens are also being revived. The castle is open to visitors offering a glimpse into its storied past.
