Ancoramar

Nestled on the edge of Guanabara Bay, Ancoramar has witnessed Rio de Janeiro’s vibrant history unfold for over eighty years. Originally named Albamar, this iconic restaurant has served countless diners while offering breathtaking views. Ancoramar’s name pays homage to its location in Praça Marechal Âncora, a square dedicated to Marshal Aires Antônio de Morais Âncora, a distinguished veteran of the Paraguayan War. The restaurant’s story begins in 1933, when it opened within one of the five octagonal towers of the Praça XV Municipal Market. This market, established in 1908, replaced the older market at Largo do Moura. It featured a square layout with longitudinal pavilions and a central tower boasting a clock. Ancoramar’s tower, however, survived the market’s demolition in the 1950s due to the construction of the Perimetral Elevated Highway. This survival was thanks to its protected status, granted by IPHAN (National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute) in 1962. A few years later, in 1964, the restaurant’s interior received a stylish makeover by architect Roberto da Costa Soares. Fast forward to 2016, the removal of the Perimetral Elevated Highway and the revitalization of Praça Marechal Âncora breathed new life into the area. Ancoramar, sporting its new name, expanded to include a sophisticated ground-floor bar, further enhancing its appeal. Today, Ancoramar continues to delight guests with its stunning panoramic views of Guanabara Bay, Ilha Fiscal, Santos Dumont Airport, and the Rio-Niterói Bridge. The restaurant’s legacy, built on fresh seafood, a historic setting, and a dash of Rio’s magic, makes it a must-visit destination.
