Envision a mosque rising from the ashes. This is the story of Masjid Hasanah. Masjid Hasanah stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit. It was originally built in 1971 in Teban Gardens. The mosque served as a replacement for older suraus from the nine southern islands. These islands were demolished for industrial development, specifically to create Jurong Island. The displaced residents needed a place of worship. Before Masjid Hasanah, the nearest mosque was all the way in Pasir Panjang. Jurong Town Corporation recognized this need and funded the construction of the mosque. Masjid Hasanah became the first full-fledged mosque in Jurong. The mosque has undergone several transformations since its inception. It was first built on reclaimed land, a former mangrove swamp. In 1989, the mosque underwent a major redevelopment. This expansion resulted in a four-storey building, completed in 1992, designed to accommodate the growing population in Teban Gardens and Pandan Garden. Tragedy struck in 1993. A fire, occurring right before Hari Raya Aidil Fitri, damaged parts of the newly renovated mosque. Classrooms on the second storey were particularly affected. Yet, the community rallied, and the mosque was reconstructed and reopened in 1996. Masjid Hasanah continued to adapt and grow. In 2005, it became the first mosque in Singapore to install a passenger lift. Today, Masjid Hasanah continues to serve its diverse community. It stands as a symbol of perseverance and a vital hub for the Teban and Pandan Gardens communities.
