Hidden within the vibrant heart of Montevideo lies Bodega Bouza, a winery steeped in history and brimming with the promise of exceptional wines. Did you know that the Bouza family, with their extensive experience in the food industry, embarked on their winemaking journey in 1999? Bodega Bouza was founded by Elisa and Juan Bouza and winemaker Eduardo Boido. Their vision was clear: to craft premium, small-production wines that truly capture the essence of Uruguayan terroir. The family first acquired a 35-year-old vineyard in Las Violetas, Canelones. This vineyard remains a cornerstone of Bodega Bouza’s production. They then transformed a historic winery in Melilla, Montevideo, breathing new life into a property that had lain dormant since the 1960s. Bodega Bouza’s vineyards now extend across various regions, each with unique microclimates and soil compositions. The Melilla vineyard, just outside Montevideo, is planted with Tannat, Merlot, Albariño, Chardonnay, and Tempranillo. Bodega Bouza was the first winery to plant Albariño in South America, a testament to their innovative spirit. Las Violetas, in Canelones, contributes top-quality Tannat, Merlot, Albariño, and Chardonnay. The coastal vineyards of Pan de Azúcar and Las Espinas, with their maritime influence, offer yet another dimension to Bodega Bouza’s portfolio, including Riesling and Pinot Noir. The winery also cultivates Merlot and Tannat in Canelón Chico. Bodega Bouza’s winemaking philosophy centers around minimal intervention and meticulous attention to detail. Each parcel of their vineyards is vinified separately, allowing the unique character of each terroir to shine through. From their classic Bouza line to the single-vineyard Vinos de Viñedo and the limited-edition Parcela Única, Bodega Bouza offers a diverse range of wines. Their Monte Vide Eu, a blend of Tempranillo, Merlot, and Tannat, stands as their iconic wine, a testament to the winery’s dedication to excellence. Winemaker Eduardo Boido has played a pivotal role in shaping Bodega Bouza’s identity, bringing his deep understanding of Uruguayan viticulture and his passion for quality winemaking to the forefront. So, as you stand before Bodega Bouza, take a moment to appreciate the legacy of this remarkable winery. It’s a story of vision, innovation, and a deep-rooted connection to the land, all culminating in the creation of exceptional Uruguayan wines.
