Founded in 1945 the Zion Travelers Missionary Baptist Church began in the home of Reverend G B Hamilton. The church soon purchased property at 3515 South Rhodes in Chicago Illinois. This wasn’t their final location though. In 1961 the Chicago Land Commission acquired the Rhodes site. Zion Travelers Missionary Baptist Church relocated to 4959 South Washington Park Court in Chicago. Reverend Hamilton passed away in 1967. Reverend W C Brown became the next pastor. The church paid off its mortgage in 1981. Reverend Brown sadly passed away in 1983. The Zion Travelers Missionary Baptist Church needed a new pastor. Reverend Alfred E Smith accepted the call to become pastor in December 1983. Under Reverend Smith’s leadership the church membership flourished. Reverend Smith had a vision to build a strong church community before constructing a new building. He believed in fostering a deep sense of faith and fellowship among his congregation. This vision guided the church’s growth and expansion. The church’s membership grew significantly under his guidance. In August 1994 the Zion Travelers Missionary Baptist Church moved to a new $1 2 million church home at 14875 South Wallace Avenue in South Holland Illinois. This move marked a significant milestone in the church’s history symbolizing its continued spiritual and financial prosperity. The church continued to prosper both spiritually and financially. In April 2004 the Zion Travelers Missionary Baptist Church opened the Zion Buds of Promise Christian Academy. The academy has continued to grow providing education and faith-based training for children. A new educational facility was completed at the church site in February 2014. The church continues to follow Reverend Smith’s vision to build the kingdom of God. The Zion Travelers Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. It’s a place where people come together to worship grow and learn. Pastor Smith’s leadership transformed the church from a small home gathering to a thriving community center. The church’s journey through multiple locations reflects its resilience and adaptability.
