How did they transport that massive bridge here? That’s the question that often pops into people’s minds when they stand before the Teerhofbr\u00fccke. The Teerhofbr\u00fccke is a pedestrian bridge that gracefully arches over the Weser River. It links the Teerhof peninsula with the Schlachte promenade and Bremen’s charming Old Town. Before the Teerhofbr\u00fccke existed, the only way for pedestrians to reach this part of town was by crossing two busy road bridges. Imagine the relief when this bridge dedicated solely to pedestrians was unveiled in 1993. What’s fascinating is that the bridge wasn’t built piece by piece on-site. The entire 420-ton steel structure, a marvel of a hollow box girder design, was assembled elsewhere and then, in an incredible feat of engineering, floated down the river on a giant pontoon to its final resting place. The bridge is a testament not just to architectural ingenuity but also to a desire to connect people to places and to each other.
