In 1983, amidst the gentle slopes of Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, the Hiroshima Prefectural Kure Kure Showa High School opened its doors. This wasn’t just any school. Hiroshima Prefectural Kure Kure Showa High School held a unique position as the only high school in the hilly Showa area. The school initially employed a unique selection system. It remained a distinctive institution within the local educational landscape throughout its existence. Fast forward to 2018, and Hiroshima Prefectural Kure Kure Showa High School celebrated its 35th anniversary. A significant milestone marked with pride by alumni and the community. Just a year later, in 2019, the school made a change to its schedule. Taking into consideration the commute of its students, the 40-minute later start time was abandoned. It was adjusted to a 35-minute start time, aligning with other high schools in the area. The writing was on the wall, however. In 2021, Hiroshima Prefectural Kure Kure Showa High School ceased accepting new students. This marked the beginning of the end. Sadly, in March 2024, Hiroshima Prefectural Kure Kure Showa High School closed its doors for good. While there were nearby campsites and roads, the lack of accessible bus routes posed a significant challenge for students. This accessibility issue, coupled with declining enrollment, ultimately led to the school’s closure. Despite its relatively short lifespan, Hiroshima Prefectural Kure Kure Showa High School fostered a vibrant student life. From its active sports clubs, like soccer and softball, to cultural pursuits such as English, calligraphy, and broadcasting clubs, students found numerous avenues to explore their interests. Even in its closure, Hiroshima Prefectural Kure Kure Showa High School’s legacy continues. Notable alumni include youth seat advocate, Shoichi Komame. Also, Daisuke Arakawa, a former professional ski jumper and Japanese representative at the World Cross-Country Skiing Championships. Hiroshima Prefectural Kure Kure Showa High School’s story is a poignant reminder of the vital role local institutions play in shaping communities and the lasting impact they have, even after they’re gone.
