Did you know that Masjid Jamek Sungai Tiram has moved with the times? It is no longer a small wooden structure. Today we stand before a building of bricks.
Masjid Jamek Sungai Tiram is not just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the evolving community of Sungai Tiram. It stands as a beacon near Penang International Airport and the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone. This makes it a focal point for locals tourists and workers.
Originally opened in 1976 Masjid Jamek Sungai Tiram has undergone expansions. In 2015 plans were made to further develop the mosque. This expansion was a cooperative effort. The Masjid Jamek Sungai Tiram Committee Majlis Agama Islam Negeri Pulau Pinang and developer Syarikat Nyaman Sdn Bhd all worked together.
The main goal was to increase the prayer space. It grew from accommodating 1150 people to 3360. The mosque also gained classrooms a library and administrative offices. A canteen and disabled-friendly toilets were added. Comfort for all visitors was a priority.
On January 10 2020 the new building was inaugurated. T.Y.T. Tun Dato Seri Utama (Dr) Haji Abdul Rahman Bin Haji Abbas officiated the ceremony. On this day the mosque was renamed Masjid Al-Mustagfirin Sungai Tiram.
The Penang government hoped this mosque would set an example. It was to be a model for other mosques in Penang. It demonstrated thoughtful mosque development. The project cost RM 5.0 million.
Rapid Penang buses 102 305 306 401 and 401E stop nearby. This makes Masjid Jamek Sungai Tiram easily accessible. The bus stop is a short five-minute walk away along Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.
