Consecrated on June 18 1867 Sankt Marien Church in Bremerhaven stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Initially a single-nave neo-Gothic hall church with a transept and a 49-meter-high tower it was the sole Catholic church in Bremerhaven Lehe and Geestemünde until 1911. Imagine the community’s pride in their beautiful new church.

Sadly World War II brought devastation. On September 18 1944 the church along with much of the city center was almost completely destroyed. The war left behind only a shell. The destruction was immense a heartbreaking loss for the community.

However the spirit of Sankt Marien was not broken. In 1952 it was rebuilt as a neo-Romanesque basilica. This time with narrow side aisles and no transept. A folded roof now sits atop the remaining tower stump. The faithful contributed greatly to the reconstruction. Weihbischof Johannes von Rudloff re-consecrated the church on December 8 1952. The rebuilding was a symbol of hope and renewal.

Sankt Marien is rich in Christian art from the 1950s and 60s. Osnabrück sculptor Walter Mellmann crafted many pieces. His work includes the altar with depictions of the four Evangelists. The triumphal cross above features four medallions: the birth of Jesus the Transfiguration the Resurrection and the Second Coming. Notice the ambo to the right. Its three medallions show Saints Willehad Ansgar and Rimbert. The tabernacle stele adorns the apse.

The church also boasts stunning stained-glass windows. Osnabrück glass painter Theo M Landmann designed these. They fill the nave and the sanctuary. The windows tell the story of significant figures and events in church history from the death of Peter to the proclamation of the dogma of the bodily Assumption of Mary into Heaven in 1956. Look closely and spot details like Saint Benedict and Boniface.

Ruth Landmann Mellmann’s wife created the Stations of the Cross. These fifteen ceramic plaques depict Christ’s journey to Calvary. They add to the spiritual ambiance of the side aisles. Her other ceramic works include the baptismal font and wall paintings. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry.

Despite its unstable tower Sankt Marien boasts a carillon. It features three larger bells and 24 smaller ones. Melodies are played and stored via a keyboard and computer. The carillon first rang from the tower on December 8 1984. It is a welcome addition.

Sankt Marien is more than just a building. It is a living symbol of Bremerhaven’s history faith and community spirit. A place of worship and a place of art. A place of resilience. A place of hope. It is a treasure worth preserving and exploring.
