Lebanon Lutheran Church is located at 2014 E 36th St. It creates a space for inclusive worship and fellowship. The church offers essential services. These include a drive-thru food pantry and youth programs. Lebanon Lutheran Church directly addresses local needs. It also nurtures spiritual growth.
The church hosts activities. Quilting and scouting are among them. These promote community engagement. They also encourage personal development. Lasting friendships are formed here. Lebanon Lutheran Church has a rich history. It celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2022. Swedish immigrants brought their Lutheran faith. They established a strong faith in God. In Sweden, clergy taught children to read. This ensured they could memorize Luther’s Small Catechism. Religion was deeply important to the immigrants. Organizing a church congregation was a first concern.
In 1872, Swedish members formed the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Lebanon Church. Services were in Swedish until the early 1930s. The neighborhood around the church is still known as Swedentown. Carl and Johanna Johnson donated land in 1877. The church is built on this land.
Tuve Hassalquist was the founding President. He led the Augustan Synod of Swedish Lutherans. The painting over the altar is original. Jonas Olaf Grastrom painted it.
The WELCA Windows were installed in 1988. Local artist Sharon Brown created them. They honor all the women of Lebanon Lutheran. These women have served the congregation. They have also served the community.
Lebanon Lutheran Church offers a variety of programs. These benefit the local community. Scouting and quilting are among them. Quilting takes place on Mondays. The food pantry operates on Wednesdays. It runs as a drive-thru. The church also provides backpacks filled with school supplies. This is part of their Back to School program.
For over 70 years, Lebanon Lutheran Church has sponsored White Lake Scouting. Lebanon Lutheran Church is more than a building. It is a community. It is a place where all are welcome. It is a place where faith and service intertwine.
