Seventeen years. That’s all it took for Élise Delanian to become a symbol of courage in Marseille. Right here on Rue Élise Delanian we honor her memory. This street bears her name. It is a tribute to her bravery during the liberation of Marseille.

Élise was an Armenian girl. She lived with her family on Boulevard de Beaumont. The boulevard is located in Marseille’s 12th arrondissement. This area is a prominent Armenian neighborhood.

In 1944 during World War II the liberation of Marseille began. General Joseph de Goislard de Montsabert approached the Beaumont neighborhood. A German blockhouse was positioned at Place Pasteur. Élise risked her life to bring water to the French soldiers. They were fighting to reclaim their city.

Tragically Élise was caught in the crossfire. She was struck down at just 17 years old. Her sacrifice was not in vain. France recognized her valor. She was declared “Morte pour la France” meaning “Died for France”.

Later her brother Dr. Louis Delanian requested that the city honor her. The municipality named this street Rue Élise Delanian in her memory. Mayor Robert Vigouroux inaugurated the street’s plaque.

Rue Élise Delanian connects Boulevard de Beaumont and Boulevard des Fauvettes. It lies in the Saint-Julien and Beaumont quarters. These neighborhoods are heart of Marseille’s Armenian community. As you walk along Rue Élise Delanian remember the young woman who gave everything for her country. Her spirit lives on in this street’s name. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom. Consider Élise’s story. It is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. May we never forget Élise Delanian. Her memory is a beacon of hope and courage for Marseille.
