Hidden amidst the rugged terrain of Serra de na Burguesa lies the Polvorí de na Beiana. A sense of mystery hangs in the air here at Polvorí de na Beiana. This isn’t just any cave entrance. It’s a gateway to a story etched in history. Polvorí de na Beiana was originally a place of transit for shepherds, charcoal burners, and hunters navigating the slopes of na Burguesa. In the 19th century, even the zoologist Alexander Pagenstecher and Robert Bunsen traversed this very area. Their 1865 expedition through the barranc de na Beiana offered a glimpse into the area’s serene past. But the 20th century brought a dramatic shift. The tranquility of Polvorí de na Beiana was interrupted by the arrival of the military. After a series of accidents in other military storage facilities, the secluded yet accessible location of na Beiana became ideal for a new gunpowder magazine. Despite landowner opposition, the Polvorí de na Beiana was inaugurated in 1911. The complex included three magazines, one external and two underground, each capable of storing around 100 tons of gunpowder. It also housed a guardhouse for twenty-three soldiers, a small house, two carriage houses, and four watchtowers. The once open landscape became restricted, guarded by generations of soldiers. Access to Polvorí de na Beiana, once traversed by locals, was now controlled by military necessity. The military presence lingered until 2005, when the land was decommissioned and auctioned off by the Ministry of Defense. The once vital Polvorí de na Beiana now stands as a silent testament to a bygone era, a stark contrast to its peaceful beginnings. The echoes of history linger here, whispering tales of both tranquility and military might.
