Gazing up at the towering white steeple of the Emmauskirche in Munich, one might wonder about the stories it holds. The Emmauskirche, a Protestant church nestled in Harlaching, stands at the intersection of Langobardenstraße and Seybothstraße. Its striking white facade contrasts beautifully with the cyan pyramidal roof. This Lutheran church, built in 1964 by architect Franz Lichtblau, possesses a modern elegance. Inside, vibrant murals by Hubert Distler, completed in 1970, adorn the walls. A stunning rose window above the altar, crafted by Rudolf Büder, depicts the Last Supper. Sadly, recent problems with the roof structure have led to services being held in the community hall. The church is actively working on repairs. They are even accepting donations for the restoration project. The Emmauskirche has been a welcoming host to the Church of the Ascension for over 50 years. This close relationship has fostered a sense of community between the two congregations. They often participate in joint services and share invitations to events. The Emmauskirche is also home to the Munich Konzertchor. For over five decades, the choir has rehearsed within the church. They contribute to the rich musical tapestry of the Emmauskirche’s services. So, while the main sanctuary may be temporarily closed, the spirit of the Emmauskirche remains vibrantly alive. Its doors, though currently closed to main services, are symbolic of the enduring faith and community it represents within Harlaching.
