Elsfleth has been around for a long time, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. It was even a center of religion for an area called Nordstedingen, and the folks of Elsfleth were known for settling disputes between the Friesians and Bremeners.
Elsfleth’s ship-building past is definitely something to behold. Situated on the Weser, it was the perfect place to build boats and ships. In fact, in the 19th century, Elsfleth was the busiest port in the Oldenburg region, and it rivaled Hamburg and Bremen! Elsfleth was well-known for its sailing ships, which were used for training, transportation, and even exploration in the era of tall-ship travel. That was before steamships took over!
The location of Elsfleth is significant because it’s at a point where the main stream of the Weser changed, and the old river channel was a bit of a drain on the local economy. But Elsfleth persevered! In the 20th century, it was a busy ship-building center again with a shipyard that manufactured vessels to transport fish.
Today, it’s a lovely town with a mix of old and new. It’s really worth a visit to experience both its historical charm and the modern life by the river.
