uhlsport Park opened in 1992. It was initially built for SpVgg Unterhaching. They were a successful team but needed a bigger home. The stadium originally held only 11000 spectators. That number was way too small. Their unexpected rise to the Bundesliga in 1999 changed everything.
The DFB demanded massive upgrades. They needed more seats. More parking. Improved safety. So the stadium underwent huge renovations. The work spanned several years. The north and east stands grew significantly. A small standing curve was added. The east stand’s grassy mound was replaced with proper seating. The upgrades transformed uhlsport Park. It eventually reached its current capacity of 15053.
One of the stadium’s quirky features is the two-story clubhouse behind the south stand. The players’ tunnel also emerges from this south stand. This is unusual for a football stadium. The restaurant in the clubhouse even has a beer garden. You can often see the visiting team’s bus parked close by.
uhlsport Park hosted memorable matches. In 1999-2000 one of their games against VfB Stuttgart sold out completely. 10300 people attended this 2-0 victory. That same season there were thrilling derbies against TSV 1860 Munich and FC Bayern Munich. Initially those games were planned for the Olympic Stadium. It would have been huge for the team but then their sponsor stepped in. Erich Lejeune paid to keep them in their beloved home stadium.
Another incredible moment happened in May 2000. Bayer Leverkusen needed a win to become champions. But SpVgg Unterhaching won 2-0. A Michael Ballack own goal and a Markus Oberleitner header sealed the deal. FC Bayern Munich won the title thanks to this unexpected victory. The championship trophy was actually brought to uhlsport Park. But it soon left again.
uhlsport Park has seen its share of DFB-Pokal magic. The team achieved unexpected victories against higher-ranked clubs. As a third-division team they beat FC Augsburg and SC Freiburg. Even as a regional league team they managed consecutive wins against FC Ingolstadt 04 and RB Leipzig.
International matches have also graced uhlsport Park. In 2008 the German women’s national team beat England 3-0. In 2010 Germany’s U21 team defeated Ukraine 2-1. Most recently in 2023 FC Bayern Munich played a friendly match against AS Monaco.
