Established in 1829 King’s College School Wimbledon boasts a rich history. King George IV founded it as the junior department of King’s College London. Initially housed in the college’s basement in the Strand most pupils lived within walking distance. Imagine those early Victorian days. Gabriele Rossetti taught Italian. His son Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a pupil here in 1837. John Sell Cotman a renowned watercolourist was also a master. Many of his pupils became artists or architects.

By 1843 the school had 500 pupils. It needed more space. This led to its move to Wimbledon in 1897. The school was progressive. It appointed its first science master in 1855. This was unusual for the time. The first headmaster John Richardson Major served from 1831 to 1866. Ninety-nine pupils from this era are in the Dictionary of National Biography. In 1882 only Eton College outperformed King’s College School in Oxford and Cambridge examinations.

The school’s current location on Wimbledon Common is idyllic. It’s a 20-acre site. King’s College School also owns a boathouse on Putney Embankment. There are playing fields in Raynes Park and Motspur Park. Extensive renovations took place from 2010 to 2019. These included a new sports pavilion quadrangle classroom block music school and sports centre. The school remains linked to its parent institution. One governor is nominated by King’s College London.

King’s College School is academically rigorous. Sixth formers choose between the IB Diploma and A-Levels. Fifth formers take GCSEs and iGCSEs.
