Founded in 1969 by the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood Assisi Hospice began as Assisi Home for the Poor and Sick. It was a humble beginning a testament to the sisters’ unwavering dedication. Their mission was simple to care for the sick and dying. They offered comfort and dignity to those in need.
The hospice wasn’t always as it is today. Initially it served a different purpose. It started small but grew steadily. It evolved. It expanded its services. It grew to meet the ever-increasing needs of Singapore’s community. This included inpatient hospice care day hospice care and importantly home hospice care. They provided holistic care encompassing medical nursing psychosocial and spiritual support. A truly comprehensive model of care.
In 2017 a momentous occasion took place. A new building opened its doors. A six-story building this modern marvel houses 85 beds. This doubled the hospice’s capacity. The new facilities were designed to enhance patient and family experience. The new building boasts specialized wards. There is a dedicated ward for dementia patients. This is the first of its kind in Singapore. A pediatric palliative care ward was also constructed. This also was a first in the nation.
The modern Assisi Hospice wasn’t built overnight. It took time. It needed financial support. Donations and philanthropic contributions played a crucial role. For example Khoo Bee See a philanthropist generously donated a million Singapore dollars to the hospice. Such support enabled Assisi Hospice to achieve its vision of providing state of the art palliative care.
Today Assisi Hospice stands as a beacon of hope. It continues its mission of providing compassionate care to the terminally ill. It serves not only the patients but their families too. The hospice is a place where lives are honored and where memories are cherished. It is a place of peace a refuge for those nearing the end of their journey. A place of peace in the heart of Singapore.
