Established in 1985 Newham College stands proudly in East Ham. It’s a significant part of Newham’s educational landscape. This impressive institution wasn’t built overnight. It’s a testament to a merger. East Ham College of Technology and West Ham Further Education College joined forces. Their legacy lives on in this thriving hub of learning.
Newham College isn’t just about traditional classrooms. It boasts six neighbourhood learning centres. These smaller centres reach into the heart of the community. They offer greater accessibility for students. This college isn’t confined to East Ham either. It has a presence in Stratford. The college’s reach extends beyond further education. It uniquely manages the Fashion and Textile Museum in Central London.
Think of the thousands of students who have passed through its doors. Over 23000 students were enrolled in 2018 alone. At its peak it was one of the largest further education colleges in England. Its impact stretches far and wide. Many successful individuals honed their skills within these walls. Notable alumni include the iconic fashion designer Lee Alexander McQueen. He studied at West Ham Technical College. He later became a Savile Row apprentice. The college also educated celebrated cartoonists Gerald Scarfe and Ralph Steadman. They both attended East Ham Technical College.
The college’s history isn’t without its challenges. In 2019 the Office for Students refused its higher education registration. It was due to concerns over student outcomes. The college persevered. In 2018-2019 it achieved remarkable success. Its overall achievement rates reached an impressive 90.9%. This made it the best performing college in London. Newham College is more than a provider of further and higher education. It plays a vital role in training skilled workers. It was awarded the Mayor’s Construction Academy Quality Mark. This demonstrates its dedication to providing the construction sector with highly-skilled workers.
In 2024 a significant event took place. Newham College merged with Newham Sixth Form College. This merger creates a powerhouse of post-16 and adult education. It serves over 12000 students. Jamie Purser took the helm as principal and CEO in January 2025. He brings a wealth of experience. He previously served as Newham College’s deputy principal and NewVIc’s acting principal. Newham College continues to evolve. It remains a cornerstone of Newham. Its dedication to education and community engagement shines through. Its future remains bright.
