Depicting a large, weathered anchor, it commemorates the historical significance of Anchor Iron & Crowley’s Wharf, a bustling hub for maritime trade. The inscription at the base of the sculpture reveals a captivating story of ownership transformations, going all the way back to the year 964, when King Edgar granted this land to the Abbey of St Peter’s in Ghent, Flanders. The land changed hands numerous times, eventually being sold to Sir John Morden, a wealthy merchant, who built Morden College in 1695. This was a testament to his generosity, aimed at supporting merchants who faced hardship due to maritime perils.
