This grand Georgian mansion, built for Lord Admiral Hawke, a man known for his decisive naval victories – most notably at Quiberon Bay – was his home in the twilight of his career. It was here that the man who had won battles against the French navy, and was later elevated to the peerage, found peace in the rolling Surrey fields. The house itself is a masterpiece of its time – red brick with tall ceilings, and a slate mansard roof. It’s hard to imagine the once sprawling formal gardens, now reduced to a modest parking area. There’s an air of quiet dignity here, a reminder of the man who lived here and the battles he fought. Hawke House survives, a monument to a powerful figure from the past, and a reminder of Sunbury-on-Thames’ rich maritime history.
