Founded in 1905 by the Augustinian Order St Rita Roman Catholic Church stands proudly in Chicago. It’s a testament to faith and community. This wasn’t always its location though.

The first St Rita Church and high school opened in 1906. It served a growing community of about 700 families. Father James Green OSA was instrumental in its creation. He was a true pioneer. The church’s early years were marked by expansion. It even oversaw three mission churches. These eventually became their own parishes St Gall St Nicholas of Tolentine and St Clare of Montefalco.

By 1911 St Rita Parish separated from the high school. Its boundaries shifted several times. More buildings were constructed a new church rectory convent and school. The school opened in 1916 run by Dominican Sisters. The current church building was constructed in the late 1940s. It was built over the existing structure.

The 1960s brought increased lay involvement. The church adapted to changing times. The neighborhood and world evolved. St Rita remained a steadfast presence in southwest Chicago. By the 1980s the parish became predominantly Hispanic. Many parishioners were immigrants from Mexico. This remains true today.

St Rita’s continues its important work. It promotes peace community and relationships. The church serves and loves through justice mercy and charity. Through many changes the parish remains faithful loving and generous. May St Rita’s intercession continue to bless those who call St Rita home. A true beacon of hope in Chicago. This is more than just a church. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith community and the Augustinian spirit.
