Whispers of ancient chants echo through time, here at the Église Orthodoxe Roumaine des Saints Archanges. This sacred space, nestled in Paris’s 5th arrondissement on Rue Jean-de-Beauvais, has witnessed centuries of history. The Église Orthodoxe Roumaine des Saints Archanges isn’t simply a church. It’s a cathedral, a beacon of the Romanian Orthodox faith in Western and Southern Europe. The story of the Église Orthodoxe Roumaine des Saints Archanges begins long before its Romanian ties, in 1374. Raymond du Temple, a renowned architect, designed this Gothic masterpiece for the College de Dormans, part of the old University of Paris. Dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, it stands as the sole surviving medieval chapel in the area. Imagine the scholars who once walked these halls, their voices rising in debate and prayer. The French Revolution brought change, and the college dissolved. The building took on new roles, serving as a meeting place for revolutionaries, a town hall, and even a barracks. In 1868, it became a Dominican convent, narrowly escaping demolition thanks to historian Jules Quicherat. The year 1882 marked a turning point. Romania acquired the building and embarked on a decade-long restoration, transforming it into a haven for Romanian Orthodox worship. Consecrated in 1892, the Église Orthodoxe Roumaine des Saints Archanges became a spiritual home for the Romanian community in Paris. The church’s façade, altered during the reign of Louis XV, was meticulously reconstructed in the late 19th century to reflect its original 14th-century Gothic splendor. Look closely at the tympanum above the portal. You’ll see a stunning mosaic depicting the Archangels, created by Guibert-Martin in 1926. Inside, the original wooden framework, crafted by the royal carpenter Jacques de Chartres, still graces the five-bay nave. In 2009, the church’s status was elevated to a cathedral, solidifying its importance within the Romanian Orthodox faith. It became the seat of the Metropolis of Western and Southern Europe. The Église Orthodoxe Roumaine des Saints Archanges also houses the Centre Dumitru-Stăniloae, a theological center established in 2008. The center offers general theological education. The Église Orthodoxe Roumaine des Saints Archanges is more than just stones and mortar. It is a living testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring power of the human spirit.
