From a pear orchard to a London suburb, Purley’s journey through time is truly captivating. Purley’s name itself hints at its origins. Around 1200, the land was known as “Pirlea,” a Saxon word meaning “a clearing where pear trees grow.” This tranquil image contrasts sharply with the bustling suburb Purley is today. Purley sits 11.7 miles south of Charing Cross. It boasts a rich history spanning at least 800 years. Once a part of Surrey, Purley became part of Greater London in 1965. This transition marked a significant shift, weaving Purley into the fabric of London’s vibrant tapestry. Purley played a role during World War II. Nearby Kenley Aerodrome was a vital fighter station, defending London during the Battle of Britain and supporting the evacuation of Dunkirk. Back in Purley, the “Factory Battalion” of the Home Guard protected the crucial Purley Way factories. Tragically, these factories suffered heavy bombing in August 1940, resulting in over sixty civilian deaths. Purley also holds a unique memorial to World War I. Promenade de Verdun, a 600-yard road, features Lombardy poplars planted in local soil mixed with French earth from Armentières. This symbolizes the Anglo-French alliance and commemorates the fallen soldiers. Today, Purley is perhaps best known as the setting of the beloved sitcom “Terry and June.” This show captured the essence of suburban life, further cementing Purley’s place in popular culture. The area continues to evolve. The Purley Business Improvement District works tirelessly to enhance the town’s retail and commercial landscape. The Webb Estate, a gated community within Purley, has attracted affluent residents, adding another layer to the area’s diverse character. From pear trees to sitcoms and from wartime defenses to modern developments, Purley’s story continues to unfold.
