Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to Chicago’s vibrant history. It is located in the heart of Bronzeville. This neighborhood became a significant area for African Americans. They found a church home here in the early 1920s during the Great Migration.

Before Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church became a beacon of gospel music, it was a synagogue. Built in 1898 it was one of Chicago’s early Reform Judaism synagogues. Dankmar Adler designed it. This golden brick building boasts a Classical Revival style. Its acoustics are remarkably fine. Ebenezer Church purchased it in 1921.

Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church gained a reputation as a center for gospel music. Theodore R. Frye Roberta Martin and Thomas A. Dorsey led the way. Dorsey is known as the Father of Gospel Music. His groundbreaking gospel choir blended Christian praise with blues. This unique sound launched the careers of gospel legends.

Sallie Martin Mahalia Jackson and Dinah Washington all rose to fame here. Martin was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Jackson moved hearts with her voice. Washington entered the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

During the 30-year leadership of Rev Frank K Sims Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church welcomed distinguished guests. Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr Ralph Metcalfe Adam Clayton Powell and Mahalia Jackson graced its sanctuary.

Dr King once said that Mahalia Jackson’s voice comes only once in a millennium. She sang “How I Got Over” at the March on Washington in 1963. She stood behind King as he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.

Dinah Washington formerly Ruth Jones started as a teenage gospel singer. In 1940 she performed “Precious Lord Take My Hand.” Thomas A. Dorsey wrote this popular song.
