Three figures frozen in time tell a powerful story. This is Ang Supremo located here in Bonifacio Global City. It is a monument to Andres Bonifacio. He was the founder of the revolutionary Katipunan movement.
This BGC sculpture won a 1997 competition. The goal was to design a monument dedicated to Bonifacio. It was installed here in July 1998. That year marked the Philippine Centennial.
Ben-Hur G Villanueva created Ang Supremo. It stands three meters high. The BGC sculpture is made of welded bronze sheets and brass.
Bonifacio is tearing apart his cedula. His itak is at his waist. It symbolizes the uprising. His stance shows courage and power. His fellow Katipuneros respected him.
The female figure is Gregoria de Jesus. She was Bonifacio’s wife. She symbolizes the Filipina. She waves the Philippine flag.
The third figure is a Katipunero. He holds a spear. Together, the three figures represent KKK. It was the symbol of the revolutionary movement.
Villanueva wanted his art to be accessible. He wanted it to be for the masses. He appreciated BGC’s public art program. It is free for all to see. He said it comforts people.
