Where the Wandle and Wrythe rivers meet sits a hidden gem. This is Wilderness Island. It is a Local Nature Reserve with a fascinating history.

Wilderness Island spans 2.7 hectares. It is a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. Sutton Council owns it. The London Wildlife Trust manages it.

Let’s step back in time. In the 17th century, this island was an industrial site. Copper mills once stood here. Watercourses powered these mills. They were at the confluence of the rivers. Later, Wilderness Island transformed. It became a pleasure garden.

The owner of Shepley House created ponds in the 1700s. These ponds held carp. The carp supplemented the household’s diet. The carp are long gone. Some ponds remain. One pond now forms a long sedge bed.

Attempts to build housing in the 20th century failed. Local residents opposed these plans. In 1987, management passed to the Trust. It was designated a Local Nature Reserve.

Today, Wilderness Island boasts diverse habitats. There is wetland. There is wildflower meadow. There is woodland. Mature horse chestnut, willow and oak trees thrive.

The island supports many species of birds. It also provides habitat for invertebrates. The best way to explore Wilderness Island is by following the nature trail.

Keep an eye out for the fish pond. It remains from the former public garden. Look for woodland. Discover meadows and river habitats. Spot a black poplar tree.

Birdwatchers may see a woodpecker. The lucky ones might glimpse a kingfisher. A grebe could be on the water.

Butterfly enthusiasts can search for speckled wood butterflies. Holly blue butterflies might flutter by. The rare hornet clearwing moth also lives here. The ponds teem with wetland plants. They form an important habitat.

Local volunteers play a vital role here. They manage the ponds. They care for the meadow and woodlands. They improve the pathways. They also run wildlife events for the public.

Wilderness Island is open at all times. The best time to visit is from April to August.

Remember to respect the environment. Do not disturb nesting birds. There is only one access point. It is from River Gardens.

So, take a moment. Breathe in the fresh air. Listen to the sounds of nature on Wilderness Island. It is a unique blend of history and ecology. A true wilderness in the heart of London.
