High above Leipzig, atop the Leipzig Institute for Meteorology (LIM), sits LIM Fernerkundung. It’s not a place you can simply stroll into. LIM Fernerkundung is a collection of sophisticated remote sensing instruments. These instruments constantly scan the sky. They gather crucial data about our atmosphere. The name, “Fernerkundung,” literally translates to “remote sensing”. It perfectly describes the work done here at LIM. The Leipzig Institute for Meteorology is a hub of atmospheric research. It is one of the largest in Germany, boasting seven professorships and around 150 students. The institute’s research focuses on understanding climate, climate change, and weather. Their findings are nationally recognized. LIM Fernerkundung plays a crucial role in this research. One key instrument at LIM Fernerkundung is the LIMRAD94, a 94 GHz Doppler cloud radar. This radar provides detailed profiles of rain droplets and their behavior. Even a wind-measuring lidar is part of this collection. This device uses lasers to measure wind speed and direction. These instruments are essential for validating atmospheric models with real-world data. They provide detailed profiles of the atmosphere’s temperature, water vapor content, and other critical parameters. The data gathered at LIM Fernerkundung feeds into a wide range of research areas. It helps scientists understand cloud behavior, precipitation patterns, and even the dynamics of the upper atmosphere. This information is not just theoretical. It has practical applications for improving weather forecasting and renewable energy predictions. So, while you can’t physically visit LIM Fernerkundung, remember its presence.
