Ever heard of a woman who became the spiritual leader of a nation? That woman was Eva Perón. She was more than just a First Lady. She was a force.

Eva Perón or Evita as many called her, was born Marìa Eva Duarte. She came from humble beginnings. Born in Los Toldos she experienced poverty early in life.

At just 15 years old Eva Perón chased her dreams. She moved to Buenos Aires to become an actress. She worked hard to find fame on stage, radio and film.

Then in 1944 fate intervened. Eva met Colonel Juan Perón at a charity event. It was for earthquake relief in San Juan. The two married the next year.

In 1946 Juan Perón was elected President. Eva Perón stepped into a new role as First Lady. She became a powerful figure in Argentine politics.

Eva Perón championed labor rights. She ran the Ministries of Labor and Health. She created the Eva Perón Foundation. This was a charity that helped many Argentinians.

Evita also fought for women’s rights. She helped women get the right to vote. She formed the Female Peronist Party.

In 1951 Eva Perón considered running for Vice President. Her supporters were the descamisados. These were the working-class Argentinians. But her health declined and she withdrew.

In 1952 Eva Perón received a special title. She became the “Spiritual Leader of the Nation”. This honor recognized her impact on Argentina.

Sadly, Eva Perón’s life was cut short. She died of cancer at the age of 33. Her death shook Argentina. She was given a state funeral. This was usually reserved for heads of state.

Eva Perón’s legacy continues today. She is a cultural icon. She is remembered for her passion. She is remembered for her fight for the poor. Her story is told in the musical Evita.

Even after her death Eva Perón remained a symbol. Her body was embalmed. It was even stolen for a time. Eventually, she was laid to rest in the Duarte family tomb.

Eva Perón’s influence transcends time. Her image has appeared on Argentine currency. A museum honors her life.

Cristina Fernández de Kirchner acknowledges Eva Perón’s impact. She says women owe Evita a debt. Evita set an example of passion. She set an example of combativeness.
