In the heart of Dresden, a simple stone holds a powerful story. The Berthold Haupt Stone stands as a stark reminder of resistance against Nazi tyranny. This unassuming memorial commemorates Berthold Haupt, a local hero who dared to defy the rising tide of fascism. Berthold Haupt, born in 1904, was a printer by trade, a socialist by conviction. He actively campaigned against the National Socialist Party in his neighborhood of Leuben. He was a member of the Social Democratic Party and the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold, a social democratic paramilitary organization. In February 1933, following an SPD rally, Haupt joined a demonstration in Dresden’s city center. Near the Schauspielhaus, the march was attacked by police and SA. Haupt was shot by a policeman. He died from his injuries the following morning. He was just 28 years old, with wedding plans for the summer. The Berthold Haupt Stone in Kleinzschachwitz, along with the Berthold-Haupt-Straße connecting Leuben and Kleinzschachwitz, serves as a testament to his bravery. Haupt’s story, etched in stone, reminds us that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit can resist oppression. The Berthold Haupt Stone isn’t just a memorial.
