Tucked away in Lyon’s 8th arrondissement, Rue des Peupliers is more than just a street. It’s a journey through time, a quiet echo of Lyon’s ever-evolving story. Rue des Peupliers begins humbly, a dead end nestled against the gentle slopes beneath community gardens. As you walk along Rue des Peupliers, notice how the street unfolds, revealing a mix of architectural styles that speak to different eras. Initially, walls of houses enclose you, giving a sense of intimacy. After Rue Chénier, Rue des Peupliers introduces you to a blend of old and new. A small apartment building stands in contrast to the elegant house at number 15. The street descends towards Rue Laviolette, lined with houses, some partially hidden, creating an air of mystery. Most of these structures date back to the mid-20th century. However, number 25, a charming house adorned with a weathercock in the shape of a rooster, stands as a delightful exception. At number 33 on Rue des Peupliers, a small, single-story building houses the offices of a mutual insurance company. This unassuming structure conceals a wooded area, crisscrossed by two driveways and a staircase that ascends to the imposing form of the clinic. The clinic’s grounds are designed as a promenade, with benches and ashtrays scattered across several small plazas, offering a peaceful retreat within the city. As Rue des Peupliers nears its end, smaller houses line the western side. Two apartment buildings with balconies rise on the east. The last building stands close to the Hôtel Lacassagne. Between these buildings, a gated alleyway, marked by a gate with gilded letters, leads to two houses and a small shed. The name, Rue des Peupliers, meaning “Poplar Street,” might lead you to search for these majestic trees. Look up towards the clinic, and you’ll likely spot them, their presence a reminder of the street’s origins. It’s believed that these poplars were already present when Rue des Peupliers was first established. Rue des Peupliers itself came into being in two stages. The southern part, from Rue Trarieux downwards, was developed first. The northern section followed later, after the sale of the Richard Vitton estate in 1920. Interestingly, the street numbering starts at 8 and 11, suggesting that Rue des Peupliers was initially intended to begin further north. The clinic, a significant landmark on Rue des Peupliers, has its own history. The first stone was laid on July 31, 1932. In a sign of the times, the mutual insurance company proposed converting the clinic into housing in 2021. The construction work is currently underway. The clinic has long been a source of activity on Rue des Peupliers. It’s complemented by the mutual insurance offices, a convalescent home, a dental center, a pharmacy, and an association that operates an MRI facility. Adding to the unique character of Rue des Peupliers, at number 41, a garage showcases a collection of vintage cars, a treat for automobile enthusiasts. Rue des Peupliers, a quiet street, yet a vibrant thread in the rich tapestry of Lyon.
