Four houses compete here. These houses are named after famous people with ties to St Christophers The Hall School. This is the story of St Christophers The Hall School. It is a co-educational preparatory school for children aged 3-11. The school stands proudly in the heart of Beckenham.
St Christophers The Hall School has a rich history. The Georgian building dates back to around 1750. It was once home to the Cator family. The family lived here until 1893. Then it became The Hall School, a school for girls. In 1926, The Hall School joined with St Christopher’s. Together, they formed the St Christophers The Hall School we know today.
Enid Blyton was Head Girl at St Christopher’s from 1913 to 1914. Sir Edmund Hillary visited the school after conquering Everest in 1953. Samuel Johnson is said to have spent a night at The Hall. Legend says Thomas Campbell wrote “Ye Mariners of England” here. He supposedly sat under the tulip tree. That tree still stands in the Lower Playground today.
The school has grown over the years. It now has more classrooms and special rooms. These rooms are for music, drama, and art. There are also two libraries and two halls. Each year group has up to two classes. This is from Preschool to Year 6. Class sizes are typically 18-22 children from Reception. Teaching assistants support teachers from Preschool to Year 4. A Learning Enrichment Team supports children as needed.
The four houses are Blyton, Johnson, Hillary, and Campbell. Children join these houses when they start in Reception. The school’s Parents’ Association works hard. They organize events and invest the money raised back into the school. They have funded a new computer suite and a minibus. They even refurbished the Prep School Library.
St Christophers The Hall School aims to help children grow. They want them to believe anything is possible. The school offers a balance of academics. It provides pastoral care and extra-curricular activities. It creates a village feel. Children bound through the gate each day. They rarely look back. This shows how happy they are here.
