In 1912, a determined group of Japanese women carved their own space in San Francisco’s history. They founded the Japanese YWCA. This building embodies their journey. The Japanese YWCA at 1830 Sutter Street became a haven. It served the social needs of women and young girls in the Japanese American community. It offered classes, support, and a sense of belonging in a new land. Architect Julia Morgan added her touch in 1932. She designed a dormitory, meeting room, a Noh theatre stage, and a serene Japanese garden. The Alien Land Law posed a challenge. It prohibited Issei women from owning property. So the San Francisco YWCA held the building in trust. World War II brought a devastating blow. Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps. The building served other purposes during the war years. It was leased to the American Friends Service Committee. The committee supported conscientious objectors and war refugees. After the war, the fight to reclaim the Japanese YWCA began. A multi-generational group of Japanese Americans united. Through years of litigation, they fought the San Francisco YWCA’s attempt to sell the building. Research of meeting minutes finally led to a victory in court. The Japanese YWCA’s legacy was secured. The building is now home to Nihonmachi Little Friends. It offers quality childcare to preschool children of Japanese-American descent. The Japanese YWCA’s story is a testament to resilience. It’s a story of community, cultural preservation, and the enduring strength of Issei women.
