A star of David formed by the roof. That is the defining symbol of this house of worship. Friends, we are standing before the Neue Synagoge in Karlsruhe. It stands as a testament to the enduring Jewish community here. It also embodies their resilience and faith.

The Jewish community in Karlsruhe has roots stretching back to the early 18th century. Jews were invited to settle here with a guarantee of religious freedom. This attracted families to the newly founded city. By 1800, the community had grown to over 500 members.

The first synagogue was built in 1724. A new synagogue was needed because the community had grown. Friedrich Weinbrenner designed this new house of worship. It was finished in 1806. This was a monumental building that showed early Neoclassical style.

Over time, the Jewish community diversified. Reform-minded families wanted changes. They founded the Karlsruher Tempelverein in 1819. They wanted prayers in German and modern sermons. Orthodox Jews resisted these reforms. This led to the establishment of a separate orthodox community in 1869.

In 1871, tragedy struck. A fire destroyed the Weinbrenner Synagogue. Only parts of the entrance survived. A new synagogue was built on the same site in 1875. Josef Durm, a renowned architect, designed it.

During the dark days of November 1938, disaster struck again. Nazi thugs set fire to the Durm Synagogue during Kristallnacht. The community was forced to demolish the remains at their own expense. The stones were used for street construction.

The Nazis deported almost 1000 Karlsruhe Jews to the Camp de Gurs internment camp in 1940. Most of them died due to the horrific conditions. Others were sent to extermination camps. After the Holocaust, a small group of survivors rebuilt the community. In 1951, they established a temporary synagogue.

The present Neue Synagoge was inaugurated in 1971. Hermann Backhaus and Harro Wolf Brosinsky designed it. Its architecture is distinctive. The building’s six-sided design culminates in a roof shaped like a Star of David. This design symbolizes both tradition and renewal.

Today, the Jüdische Kultusgemeinde Karlsruhe is an integral part of the city. It fosters interfaith dialogue. The community actively promotes Jewish culture through events. These events include concerts, lectures, and exhibitions.

This synagogue also houses the Oberrat der Israeliten. It is the central organization for Jewish communities in Baden. This emphasizes the importance of Karlsruhe in Jewish life.

As you explore the Neue Synagoge, remember the history. Recall the triumphs. Acknowledge the tragedies. Consider the unwavering commitment of the Jewish community to Karlsruhe. This place represents their enduring spirit. It is a beacon of faith. It is a testament to hope.
