Can you imagine two brothers, both doctors, both Apostles? At the New Apostolic Church in Cape Coast, the story of the Kankam brothers resonates. The older brother, Joseph Bernard Kankam, a medical doctor, became the first Ghanaian ordained a Deacon in the New Apostolic Church. This happened in May 1970 while he worked as a surgeon in Germany. His younger brother, Isaac Nantwi Kankam, a pharmacist, initially resisted the New Apostolic faith. Yet, a 1970 meeting with District Apostle Gottfried Rockenfelder and District Elder Rudolf Schilling changed everything. That Sunday, Isaac attended his first New Apostolic service at the New Apostolic Church, a moment he later described as the Lord winning his heart. The Kankam brothers, along with District Elder Schilling, affectionately known as “Papa Ghana”, became pillars of the New Apostolic Church in Ghana. The New Apostolic Church grew through their dedication. Isaac’s ordination as an Apostle in 1983 marked another milestone. He became the first local Apostle for Ghana, serving for 21 years before retiring in 2004. The New Apostolic Church thrived under his leadership. Sadly, Isaac passed away just six months later, in January 2005. His legacy, however, continues to inspire the New Apostolic Church community. Today, the New Apostolic Church in Ghana boasts a vibrant community. Thousands of members gather in numerous congregations across the country, testament to the enduring impact of the Kankam brothers and the early pioneers of the New Apostolic faith.
