Grundschule Dresden, located on Hebbelstrasse 20 in the Cotta district of Dresden, has a rich history spanning over 120 years. This isn’t just any elementary school. It’s a testament to the evolving educational landscape of Dresden. The original Cotta schoolhouse opened its doors on October 8, 1869, on Cossebauder Straße. As Cotta grew, so did the need for educational facilities. The foundation stone for the 12. Grundschule Dresden building, as we see it today, was laid on March 22, 1897. The building has seen many transformations. It first housed the 13th Bürger School. Later, it became the 12th Volksschule, then the 12th Polytechnische Oberschule. During the GDR era, it was named after resistance fighter Arthur Weineck. After 1990, it also served as a middle school. Since 2003, the building has been dedicated solely to the 12. Grundschule Dresden and its after-school program. The 12. Grundschule Dresden has undergone several renovations throughout its history. Recent improvements include new fire escapes, a redesigned cafeteria in the basement, and a beautifully renovated courtyard. The school’s commitment to modernization extends beyond its physical structure. It has embraced digital learning. The 12. Grundschule Dresden aims to create a learning environment that is more visual, active, and self-directed. Between 2019 and 2022, eight teachers participated in the Erasmus+ program “Plus 4.” This program allowed them to experience different educational systems in countries like Finland, Iceland, Poland, Spain, Portugal, and Austria.
