“Ader.” The name echoes with innovation and a touch of Parisian ambition. Place Clèment-Ader marks a tribute to Clèment Ader. He was no ordinary Parisian. He was an engineer, an inventor, and a pioneer of aviation.
Born in Muret in 1841, Ader’s curiosity knew no bounds. His father hoped he would continue the family carpentry business. However, Clèment’s talent led him to technical studies in Toulouse. His career began with the railways. Yet, his mind soared far beyond the tracks.
Ader’s inventive spirit first took flight with the vèlocipède. At the Exposition Universelle in Paris, he saw Pierre Michaux’s creation. Ader envisioned something better. He replaced the heavy iron frame with lighter, welded steel. He designed elliptical spokes for strength and integrated rubber tires for comfort.
His innovation extended to railways. Ader patented a “removable railway” system. This early version of caterpillar tracks aimed to simplify rail transport. It promised the benefits of railways without costly infrastructure. Despite its novelty, it remained mostly a demonstration.
Around 1876, Ader turned his attention to transmitting voices over distance. He developed an operational telephone device. He secured a patent in 1878. Then in 1881, he introduced the “thèatrophone”. It allowed listeners to enjoy live performances remotely.
Victor Hugo himself marveled at the thèatrophone. He described listening to the Opèra and Thèâtre-Français through special earpieces. The thèatrophone attracted international attention. Inventors bought Ader’s patents. This provided him with a fortune. He needed the money for his aeronautical experiments. This was his lifelong passion.
Clèment Ader’s ambition was to create a heavier-than-air flying machine. He designed a structure inspired by bat skeletons. The engine had to be powerful, light, and compact. Ader created a vertical steam engine with a tubular boiler. It weighed only 17 kilograms but produced 10 to 12 horsepower.
In 1890, his first aircraft, the Èole, underwent initial trials. It briefly lifted off the ground. Despite a minor incident, the War Ministry supported Ader’s work. He started building Avion n°2, named Zèphyr. An atelier was set up on Rue de Jasmin.
By 1887, Ader completed Avion n°3. He placed the cockpit behind the engine. The wings mirrored a bat’s skeletal structure covered in silk panels. Ader minimized the aircraft’s weight. It weighed only 400 kilograms. This was a remarkable feat.
On October 12, 1887, a trial took place before military officials. The aircraft lifted, proving its capability. However, on October 14, a gust of wind caused Avion n°3 to veer off course and crash.
Despite the setback, Ader continued to refine his designs. He even considered an Avion n°4. But the War Ministry ended their contract. Ader’s work was suspended.
In 1902, Ader offered the Èole and Avion n°3 to the Conservatoire des Arts et Mètiers. Only Avion n°3 was added to the collection due to space constraints. Today, it is on display at the Musèe des Arts et Mètiers in Paris.
Though controversial, Clèment Ader’s work paved the way for aviation. His Avion n°3 stands as a testament to his ingenuity. Place Clèment-Ader is a reminder of his contributions. Ader was a true pioneer.
