Parc André Malraux is a departmental park spanning 25 hectares. It provides a Central Park vibe right here in Nanterre. You might ask why this park bears the name of André Malraux. He was a famous French writer, intellectual, and politician.

Let’s delve into the park’s history. In the early 20th century this area was mostly fields. Gardens and grazing lands defined the landscape. By the 1950s many immigrant workers settled here lacking basic amenities.

The creation of Parc André Malraux was decided in 1964. André Malraux served as Minister of Cultural Affairs at that time. Construction took place in the 1970s. The park replaced former shantytowns and vacant lots. Waste from the construction of La Défense was used to create its gentle hills.

Jacques Sgard designed Parc André Malraux. The park officially opened to the public in 1979. The park was named in honor of André Malraux. Initially managed by a public agency it became the property of the department in 2005.

Notice the three artificial hills. Climbing to the top gives lovely views. Parc André Malraux extends into the Terrasses de l’Arche gardens.

The park features a two-hectare pond. It is actually composed of two basins connected by a small canal. Its banks are abundant with reeds rushes and marsh plants. This creates a habitat for various bird species. You can spot water hens coots ducks and herons. Fishing is even allowed here.

Look around and you might notice some monumental sculptures. Art lovers can appreciate these artistic additions to the park.

Don’t miss the buildings around the park. The Aillaud towers and the Opéra de Paris dance school are architectural landmarks. Also nearby is the Saint-Joseph Church a relic of old Nanterre. The history of Parc André Malraux is linked to this church.
