What stories do these walls hold? The Gutenbergschule stands before us a testament to Leipzig’s rich history in printing and education. It is more than just a school. It is a landmark with architectural significance.

The Gutenbergschule’s story began long before this building existed. Its roots trace back to 1853 with the founding of the Buchhändler-Lehranstalt Leipzig. Another root is the Buchdrucker-Lehranstalt founded in 1886. These two institutions eventually merged in 1992. They formed the Berufliches Schulzentrum we see today.

This impressive structure was built between 1927 and 1929. Otto Droge designed it for the German Book Printing Association. It was intended as a training center for printers and a master school for graphic trades. Droge incorporated various styles into the building. The exterior reflects Bauhaus principles. Inside you can find Art Deco and Brick Expressionism elements. The Gutenbergschule stands as an example of Bauhaus architecture. Its clear form aligns with functional design. It also reflects rational educational goals focused on technology and science.

Notice the bright plaster facade. Rochlitzer Porphyr stone is used sparingly to create horizontal divisions. The tower-like structure features clock faces. Rochlitzer Porphyr dominates the entrance and base. Decorative elements are minimal. This was a departure from Droge’s previous designs.

The Gutenbergschule is now a vocational training center for the city of Leipzig. Around 1,200 students attend the school. About 50 teachers work here. The school focuses on media-related education. The focus on creative content is rooted in the school’s DNA.

The Gutenbergschule offers various educational opportunities. These include vocational training, a technical secondary school and preparatory classes. The school prepares students for their professional lives. It emphasizes diversity. Students of different backgrounds and ages are welcome.

The Gutenbergschule continues to evolve. It adapts to the changing needs of the media industry. It remains committed to providing quality education. The motto of the school is: The BSZ Gutenbergschule is a media competence center.

As you stand here consider the many students. They have passed through these halls. Envision the clatter of printing presses and the creativity that fills the classrooms. The Gutenbergschule is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living legacy of Leipzig’s dedication to education and the art of media. The Gutenbergschule is a place where tradition meets innovation. It shapes the future of media professionals.
