What if these walls could talk? Winchmore School has been a cornerstone of this community since 1956. It started as a secondary modern school. Over time, it evolved into the comprehensive school we see today. Winchmore School stands on Laburnum Grove. It is more than just bricks and mortar.

The journey of Winchmore School began in 1914. Back then, it was Winchmore Council School on Highfield Road. It catered to infants and juniors. A secondary department was added in 1932. After the Education Act of 1944, it became a secondary modern school. The seniors then moved to the new Winchmore School site in 1956.

Originally, the school was known as Winchmore Secondary Modern. Mr Shepherd was its first headmaster. Later, it adopted the simpler name: Winchmore School.

Winchmore School has grown over the years. It now consists of three main buildings. Two buildings have three floors. One has two floors. For years, it even used prefabricated buildings on the primary school site.

Did you know Winchmore School became a specialist arts college in 2004? This focus on the arts has enriched the school’s culture. It offers students unique opportunities to explore their creative talents.

The Jackson family has a special connection to Winchmore School. In 2009, Tito Jackson visited the school. He spoke with a group of eager students. Katherine Jackson later donated a trophy. It is awarded to a student who excels in expressive arts.

Winchmore School has seen many students pass through its halls. Some notable alumni include Brian Bennett. He is a drummer, pianist, composer, and producer. Marcus Edwards, a talented footballer, also attended. Grime artist JME is also an alumnus. Skepta, the MC, rapper, songwriter, and record producer walked these halls.

Winchmore School continues to serve its diverse student body. In 2001, Ofsted recognized its success. It particularly noted the achievements of Black-Caribbean students. They comprised 13 percent of the student population at that time.

Today, Winchmore School is home to over 1600 students. The school’s capacity is around 1433 pupils. Jim Owen is the current headteacher. The school operates as a mixed gender community school. Winchmore School provides education for students aged 11 to 18.
