What whispers of love and controversy echo within these walls? Here stands The Great Love Church, a place whose story began far from this quiet neighborhood. Its journey started in 1968 on Queen Anne Hill as the Love Israel Family. A charismatic figure named Paul Erdmann, later known as Love Israel, founded this communal group amidst the counterculture fervor. The Great Love Church, in its early form, attracted hundreds seeking spiritual answers during a tumultuous era. Life within the Love Israel Family was unconventional. Members adopted new names, shared possessions, and embraced unique practices. Their beliefs centered on love, unity, and living in the present moment. The family operated businesses, from construction to restaurants, and even hosted a vibrant annual garlic festival on their Arlington ranch. Children were raised communally, a unique upbringing that intertwined with the broader Arlington community through schools and sports. The Great Love Church, however, wasn’t without its share of controversy. Internal conflicts and financial struggles led to a significant split in the early 1980s. Legal battles and bankruptcy ultimately forced the sale of their Arlington ranch in 2003. The Great Love Church, or what remained of the Love Israel Family, dispersed. Love Israel established a new home in Bothell, while others scattered, some maintaining a loose connection to the original community. The Great Love Church’s story is one of both unity and division. It’s a tale of unconventional beliefs, communal living, and the challenges of sustaining such a lifestyle in a changing world. The echoes of their story, filled with both love and controversy, continue to resonate within the hearts of those who were a part of it, and within the community that witnessed their journey.
