“Did they really transport a Torah from Europe after the Holocaust?” a hushed voice whispered.

We are standing before Congregation Beth Israel, a beacon of resilience and faith. Its story began not in this grand structure, but in the heart of a community yearning for connection. In 1998, a simple Yom Kippur breakfast blossomed into a Chavurah, a gathering of Jewish families seeking a sense of belonging in Northeast Tarrant County. Driven by this desire, they transformed their dream into a reality.

Congregation Beth Israel was formally established in 1999. They held their first services in a rented church, their faith echoing in a space shared with another faith. A testament to the power of community, Dr. Bernie Gojer, along with his family and Elliott Simon, built a portable Aron Kodesh to house a borrowed Torah. Their first High Holiday services were held at the Colleyville Community Center, a testament to their commitment even without a permanent home. And yes, in answer to that whispered question, the next year, they acquired a 100-150 year old Torah that had survived the Holocaust, a poignant symbol of survival and hope. This very Torah, donated with immense reverence by the Eisen family, found its home in Congregation Beth Israel.

By 2005, through sheer determination and generosity, this congregation built their own sanctuary. Stepping inside today, you feel the echoes of their journey – the early potluck dinners, the donated prayer books, the makeshift sanctuaries. Congregation Beth Israel stands as a testament to the enduring strength of faith and the power of community.
